Culms slender, smooth, upper part drooping, nearly climbing, 3-6 m tall, 0.5-1 cm in diam., nodes prominent; internodes 12-28 cm long; walls 2-3 mm thick; branches numerous at each node.
Sheath of culm deciduous, papyraceous, thin, truncate at apex, minutely hairy outside, entire; auricles of sheath small with short brown bristles; ligule of sheath truncate, aristate; blade of sheath caduous, linear or subulate, glabrous, entire. Leaves 3-10, commonly 5-7, linear-lanceolate, 6-14 cm long, 0.5-1.2 cm broad, acuminate, veins 2-3, veinlets 5-7, parallel, densely spinulose-scabrous along margins; petioles 3-6 mm long; auricles of leaf small with a few brown bristles; ligule of leaf convex, rounded, hairy; sheath of leaf 3-6 cm long; glabrous outside.
Spikelets forming clusters of 2 to 10 at each node of leafless branch, 2-4 cm long, 1-6 flowered; bracts ovate; empty glumes 2, oblong, 3-5 mm long; lemmas ovate-oblong, 10-12 mm long, 3-4 mm wide, veins 7-11; paleas 7-11 mm long, 2-3 mm wide, veins 3-4 between keels, 3 between each keel and edge; ovary ovoid; style short; stigmas 2, feathery; stamens 3, anthers 4 mm long; lodicules 3, minutely hairy.
